5 Signs You May Need to Replace Your Muffler

Unfortunately, your muffler will not last forever, but there are some definite telltale signs that can tell you when it needs to be replaced. If your muffler is on its way out, you will know from the following signs:

-          Loud noise
-          MPG is less efficient
-          Odd smells
-          Changes when you start your engine
-          Muffler is hanging lower than usual

The hallmark symptom of a dying muffler is, of course, a loud noise. The simplest way to know something is amiss, is by the deafening, roaring sound no emanating from your vehicle. Especially when starting your car, if you notice an increased level of noise, it is probably time for a new muffler.

Mileage and Foul Odors

Be on the lookout for a decreased gas mileage. An efficiently-running exhaust system will keep you in a higher fuel economy. If you have to hit the pump more frequently, it could be a sign of a problem with your muffler. A more dangerous symptom of a failing system is the presence of noxious odors in your vehicle. These will not go away simply by opening the window, and should never be ignored.
